AIS – Altea International School – a British Secondary School with Steiner-Waldorf orientation specializing in a holistic education for adolescents.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) “Adolescence is a period of preparation for adulthood during which several development experiences of great importance occur. Beyond physical and sexual maturation, these experiences include the transition to social and economic independence, the development of identity, the acquisition of the necessary skills to establish adult relationships and assume adult functions and the ability of abstract reasoning. Although adolescence is synonymous with exceptional growth and great potential, it is also a stage of considerable risks, during which the social context can have a determining influence.”

Aware of the importance of the challenge of adolescent education, through mindfulness and the use of methods inspired by the Waldorf-Steiner curriculum adapted to the British National Curriculum, AIS encourages with the same emphasis; both a solid academic foundation, artistic expression and socio-emotional development of the students.

AIS works with an educational method focused on each student that, through personalized attention, nurtures and promotes creativity, critical and independent thinking and motivation in learning; key reinforcements in adolescence so that young people find the security, moral strength and confidence necessary to face the challenges of life, with initiative and responsibility. The majority of AIS teachers are native English speakers who thrive on helping the students learn as soon as they enroll in the centre, offering a complete education from Year 7 (Key stage 3) to Sixth Form to obtain the GCSE’s and A levels of the British system. Although English is the main language of the centre it is not necessary to have an advanced level of English on entry. With a basic (beginner) level it is certainly possible to start in the lower year groups. The English-speaking environment will enable students to make steady progress. All this in a unique setting, integrated into nature, where the school’s facilities are located.

AIS is committed to a values based education which can be available to everyone. Recognising that education is not an expenditure, but rather an investment, AIS develops its non-profit activity through affordable fees, additionally providing scholarships according to need.

As Anja Traub, the Headteacher of AIS, highlights: “Our Mission is to support adolescents’ interest in learning; boost creativity, imagination and exploration; provide them with tools that allow them to develop as a critical and independent thinker, and become an autonomous, entrepreneur capable of facing the challenges of modern life.”

Without doubt, a centre that develops human qualities alongside acquisition of knowledge; both needed for the well-being and emotional growth of young people.
