Santa Faz is a day a bit hard for the body but blessed for the soul

Pilgrimage tradition to the monastery of the Holy Image (next to Alicante) officially started in 1489. In recent years on Santa Faz Day there are of about 220-250 thousand people come here. Starting from 07:00 am in the city hall and in the Cathedral of St. Nicholas in Alicante the cane sticks (cañas) are distributed for free to city inhabitants. Altogether they go on foot along av. Denia to San Juan village. This year they have prepared 15,000 sticks for pilgrims, 5,000 more than last year. This day many pilgrims traditionally wear black sweaters and t-shirts, and they tie blue and white kerchiefs over their necks
